Analysis: Electricity from solar costs 4 to 5 times more than from natural gas

According to an analysis published today in New Energy, the cost of generating electricity in the US over the plant lifetime is approximately 4 to 5 times higher for solar sources vs. conventional natural gas. Onshore wind sources are about 1.7 times more expensive and nuclear twice as expensive as a conventional natural gas plant.

  1. That chart is still a bit misleading. I don't believe for one minute the net cost of onshore wind would be equal to coal over the period of use, say 20 years. Depreciation costs, downtime, maintenance and the conventional power plants still have to run 24/7 to make up for the wind power deficiencies.
